The plantation of trees should be initiated on a large scale. Trees have multifarious benefits. They provide us with oxygen and absorb carbon dioxide. They have proven to help combat global warming. They conserve the environment, reduce temperature, and are home to various precious birds and wildlife.
However, the plantation is necessary but unfortunately, people are cutting down the beneficial trees excessively instead of planting more. Without trees, even we can not think of our existence. Deforestation is one of the main causes of global warming. The diverse impacts of deforestation are flooding, land sliding, climate change and many more.
According to research, Pakistan’s deforestation rate has been estimated between 0.2 and 0.5 percent per annum. According to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Pakistan, the deforestation rate in Pakistan is the second highest in Asia, whereas, the annual deforestation rate in Pakistan was the highest in the entire world in 2019. In this regard, The Lahore High Court (LHC) had observed that such a tendency will lead to an increase in the spread of life-threatening diseases and ordered the Punjab government, Defence Housing Authority and various other developments to make a comprehensive policy for tree plantation and penalising those who cut down the trees.
Similarly, it has been observed that the natural forest cover had reduced from 3.59 million hectares to 3.32m hectares at an average rate of 27,000 hectares annually.
Thus, as a citizen, I request every individual to initiate planting trees from today to decrease the rate of global warming in the region.
