Geneva 17/03/2022:
During the 49th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, the Baloch Human Rights Council (BHRC) gathered in front of the United Nations building at the iconic Broken Chair to protest against the unabated human rights violations by Pakistan in Balochistan.
The protesters including the representatives of various oppressed nations in Pakistan echoed concerns of the Baloch people and demanded the United Nations live up to its mandate and obligations and intervene in Balochistan to halt further harm to the already suppressed Baloch people. They were holding different placards and banners highlighting various aspects of human rights violations facing the Baloch people in Pakistan. A large banner read, “Baloch Lives Matter”.
The protest was addressed by human rights defenders from Balochistan, Sindh, and Kashmir.
As the protest ended, the BHRC officials and members of the World Sindhi Congress headed by Samad Baloch, General Secretary of BHRC, submitted a memorandum to the office of the Human Rights Commissioner Michelle Bachelet.
The memorandum highlighting the humanitarian crisis in Balochistan requested Michelle Bachelet to bring an end to the systematic genocide of the Baloch by Pakistan. “Balochistan is in turmoil. The people are living in a state of siege. The tale of blood and tears in Balochistan is continuing. The state has unleashed a reign of terror with accompanying gross human rights violations. The Baloch are facing a brutal military operation that has resulted in unimaginable losses in men and material. Destruction and burning of the Baloch settlements and displacement of thousands are acts of terror perpetrated by the Pakistani state. In a planned way, the security agencies are trying to wipe out the cream of the Baloch society physically. According to the United Nations General Assembly resolutions, many actions of Pakistani security forces and its auxiliary religious or extremist organizations come into war crimes. However, as Balochistan has been declared a no-go area for the international media and human rights organizations, nothing of the atrocities is reported in the international media. The Baloch, who is facing the worst of the atrocities and genocide acts, needs the help of the civilized world in a meaningful way. We request the United Nations to act before it is too late.”, read the memorandum.
Baloch Human Rights Council is a human rights advocacy organization that since its inception in 2008 has been highlighting the various human rights violations facing the Baloch in Iran and Pakistan and has actively been campaigning for their right to self-determination to be recognized by the international community.
