London:
The World Sindhi Congress (WSC) has urged everyone who identifies as Sindhi to say so in the 2021 census survey.
Highlighting the importance of taking part in the census, the WSC Chairperson Dr Rubina Sheikh has said that in the UK, the census happens every 10 years which has started and the last date is Sunday 21 March 2021. This helps to make decisions on planning and funding public services, including transport, education, and healthcare.
Being a Sindhi living in the UK and a minority ethnic group it is our prime responsibility to preserve our lingual and cultural identity in the UK, said, Rubina Sheikh.
One of the important actions is to reflect this in the census form. The WSC recommends as follow:
Section 14: National identity: please select ‘Others’ and write: SINDHI
Section 15 C: Ethnic group: Please select ‘Others’ and write: SINDHI
Section18: Main language:
Please select ‘Others’ and write: SINDHI
The evidence base for ‘Preserving languages preserves cultural identities’ is strong. This small action will promote the Sindhi language, assist us to open Sindhi schools, Sindhi Community Centres, create jobs such as Sindhi interpreters, teachers and help more Sindhi families to immigrate to the UK, reiterated Sheikh.
The WSC leader appealed to the UK-based Sindhis to avail from what she called a rare, golden opportunity to recognize Sindhi language and culture. She urged all UK-based Sindhi Organizations and individuals to take this as a challenge over the coming weeks and play their crucial role.
