US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the US government was aware of the restrictions imposed on media outlets and civil society in Pakistan during a news briefing at the US State Department on World Press Freedom Day.
He said that the restrictions on freedom of expression and curbs on civil society undermine Pakistan’s image and its ability to progress.
He was reportedly responding to a question from a Pakistani journalist on Pakistan’s status as one of the world’s most dangerous countries for journalists.
His comments came after a survey by Reporters Without Borders, a worldwide media watchdog, revealed that Pakistan had dropped from 145th to 157th place in the World Press Freedom Index this year.
