Geneva:
On 16 March 2022, World Sindhi Congress held a protest at the iconic Broken Chair to highlight the plight of the Sindhi people in Pakistan. The protest was held at a time when the 49th regular session of the Human Rights Council is taking place in Geneva.
The protest was attended by members of other oppressed nations in Pakistan including the Baloch, Pashtun, Kashmiris who expressed solidarity with the Sindhi people. Human rights activists from Global Human Rights Defence also attended and expressed their views in support of the demands of the Sindhi people for their right to self-determination. They demanded that Pakistan must be held accountable for its numerous human rights violations and crimes against humanity in Sindh.
Sindh has suffered various kinds of human rights abuses ranging from enforced disappearances and extra-judicial killings of political and human rights activists, writers and poets to resources exploitation, forced conversions and encroachment of their lands by the Pakistani authorities and its backed land grabbers.
Protesters were holding numerous banners and placards, some of them read, “No to CPEC”, “Stop Human Rights Violations in Sindh”, and “Stop the genocide in Sindh”.
Representatives from different oppressed nations in Pakistan addressed the protest.
Following the protest, World Sindhi Congress officials submitted a memorandum to the office of the human rights commissioner Michelle Bachelet. The memorandum drafted by WSC contained details about various human rights violations facing the Sindhi people in Pakistan for the last many decades.
World Sindhi Congress is a human rights education and advocacy organization for Sindh and Sindhis. The main objective of WSC is to establish an infrastructure to teach and disseminate educational material to the public, including, but not limited to, material relating to culture and literature of Sindhi people, their persecuted status in Pakistan, and their peaceful struggle for the human rights including the right to self-determination through publications, lectures, media or otherwise.
