Oslo:
Arjumandi was arrested and whisked away by the Pakistani security agencies in August 2009 while he was visiting his relatives in Balochistan. His whereabouts remained unknown and was not produced in any court of law throughout that period.
In 2010, the Pakistani officials confirmed to the Norwegian Embassy in Islamabad that Arjumandi was in their custody but refused to release him.
Ehsan Arjumandi’s case speaks volumes about how a repressive state like Pakistan forcibly disappears and in many cases extra-judicially murders individuals on account of their political activities and beliefs.
Thousands of Baloch socio-political activists and human rights defenders have been subjected to enforced disappearance and detained incommunicado in Pakistan, according to Baloch human rights organizations.
Despite credible evidence of enforced disappearances by the Pakistani security forces of Baloch dissidents, the international community has kept a deafening silence whereas, the Pakistani authorities have failed to identify and prosecute those involved in this heinous crime against humanity.
