London:
In a written statement on Agenda Item 3 submitted to the office of the UN Secretary-General during the 52nd session of the UN Human Rights Council, the Baloch Human Rights Council (BHRC) drew the attention of the UN Secretary-General to the state-sponsored repressive measures against Baloch social and political activists in Pakistan.
BHRC submitted the statement through its collaborative organisation, the Centre for Gender Justice and Women’s Empowerment, a non-governmental organisation in special consultative status.
The statement referred to the documentary evidence of the brutal treatment of Baloch activists in various parts of Pakistan, particularly the harassment of family members of victims of enforced disappearance who endeavour to know the whereabouts of their loved ones. The family members and legal personnel who dared to knock at the Pakistan courts’ door are told in unambiguous terms the dire consequences of their activities.
According to the BHRC statement, “Pakistan is a party to ICCPR, CEDAW, and CRC. Thus, it is obligated to provide due process of law and protection of fundamental rights, including life and liberty, to all its citizens, especially vulnerable groups such as women and children”.
BHRC stressed that as a member of the UN Human Rights Council, Pakistan must uphold the highest standards in the promotion and protection of human rights. The perpetrators of heinous crimes must not be immune from any punishment. It called upon the Council to immediately intervene and address the continuous persecution of Baloch people in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.
